A wallet that holds your keys is the foundation of using bitcoin privately. None of the wallets below ask for identity, because they are non-custodial — the keys live on your device, not on a company's server. That single fact is what separates a wallet from an account that can be frozen or forced to verify you.
Custodial vs non-custodial — the only distinction that matters
If you can reset your wallet with an email and password, someone else holds your keys and can demand KYC or freeze funds. If recovery happens through a seed phrase you wrote down, the keys are yours. Aim for the second kind every time.
For beginners (mobile)
BlueWallet, Phoenix (Lightning) and Aqua are approachable open-source mobile wallets with no signup. Phoenix is excellent for small, fast Lightning payments; Aqua suits everyday on-chain and Liquid use.
For privacy power-users (desktop)
Sparrow is the standout: coin control, labelling, CoinJoin support and the ability to connect to your own node over Tor. Wasabi builds CoinJoin in by default and routes through Tor automatically. Electrum remains a fast, battle-tested option with hardware-wallet and Tor support. For advanced users, JoinMarket turns CoinJoin into a marketplace you run yourself.
For long-term storage (hardware)
A hardware wallet keeps keys offline. Coldcard and Foundation Passport are Bitcoin-only and support fully air-gapped signing; Trezor and BitBox02 are open-source and beginner-friendly. Several can be bought with bitcoin, so even the purchase needn't be tied to you.
Don't forget Lightning and Monero
For Lightning self-custody, Zeus connects to your own node. If your privacy needs are higher, consider holding value in Monero with Feather or the official Monero wallet — both are identity-free and Tor-friendly.
Habits that beat any wallet brand
- Write down your seed offline and never type it into a website.
- Use Tor and, ideally, your own node so you aren't leaking addresses to a third-party server.
- Avoid address reuse — a fresh address per payment.
- Mind the on-ramp: a private wallet funded from a KYC exchange still links your identity to those coins. Pair self-custody with a no-KYC way to acquire bitcoin.
